Do You Have a Green Thumb?

Volunteers Needed for  Conquest Greenhouse & Nursery

The mission of Conquest Greenhouse and Nursery is to propagate trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and annuals using seeds, seedlings, and cuttings. These plants will increase plant diversity in Queen Anne's County and improve the quality of life in the Chespeake Bay Watershed. The greenhouse and nursery will be self sustaining and will encourage and utilize volunteers. The greenhouse and nursery will grow mostly native plants that add color to the landscape, food and habitat for wildlife. The greenhouse and nursery will grow plants for the Parks Department and other Queen Anne's County Departments.

Volunteer Task Opportunities

DECEMBER - MARCH: Seed production in greenhouse. Prepare soil, load soil into trays, water then plant seeds. Fertilize seedlings. Transplant seedlings into larger pots to grow larger, and prepare for outside use.

APRIL- MAY: Continue transplanting seedlings; pot up tree seedlings (usually 800) into one gallon pots. Weed existing containers in the nursery.  Water seedlings.

JUNE-JULY: Take cuttings; dip In rooting hormone, place in trays under the mist system. Once they have rooted the cuttings need to be potted up in soil.

AUGUST:  Plant seeds for fall planting such as, pansies, snapdragons, etc.

SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER: Fertilize trees, start perennial seeds, winterize left over plants for the winter.
